Smart reusable cups make their official debut at a leading international festival.
News

At the 2025 edition of Tomorrowland Winter in Alpe d’Huez, the STAR RFID solution by Aucxis was officially implemented for the first time at a music festival. The smart cups, equipped with integrated RFID chips, offered a smooth and user-friendly solution where sustainability and convenience go hand in hand.

For this project, Tomorrowland partnered with five Belgian companies: Aucxis, deSter, CupNation, Weezevent and Citymesh

Aucxis provided the RFID technology, enabling each cup to be uniquely identified and the deposit to be automatically refunded to the original payer. The cups were designed and produced by deSter, tailored to festival needs: durable, stackable, easy to transport and fully recyclable. CupNation managed the entire logistics flow: storage, transport, collection, and cleaning. Weezevent integrated their POS system with the STAR solution, ensuring seamless payment and refund processing. Citymesh delivered the network infrastructure, essential for smooth and reliable system performance in a challenging festival environment.

The synergy between these expert partners resulted in a system that not only reduces waste but also enhances the experience for festivalgoers: no queues at bars or return points, and guaranteed refunds even when treating friends.

International visitors reacted with great enthusiasm

The technology was praised as innovative and easy to use. Many were surprised by the system’s simplicity: get drinks without queuing, return cups easily, and receive automatic refunds. STAR was seen as a smart leap forward in the festival experience, merging technology and sustainability effortlessly.

The successful implementation at Tomorrowland Winter underlines STAR’s innovative character and paves the way for broader applications at festivals and major events worldwide.
