70.000 concrete blocks with RFID reinforce the Dutch Afsluitdijk

In order to guarantee their quality, Levvel required full traceability of the concrete blocks from the production to the installation on the dike.

Since 2018, the construction consortium Levvel has been working on the renewal of the enclosure dam Afsluitdijk which has been protecting the Netherlands against flooding for 100 years. In the meantime, the gigantic backhoe pontoon Titaan has placed no less than 70,000 innovative, extremely strong concrete blocks – Levvel-blocs – with RFID technology to reinforce the dike.

In order to guarantee the quality of the blocks, Levvel required full traceability of the concrete blocks, from production to installation by the backhoe pontoon Titaan on the dike. The climatically harsh environment and the robust industrial materials used needed to be taken into account.

Our ATLAS Item Identification & Tracking solution met these requirements perfectly. Each Levvel-bloc has been equipped with an RFID tag, manufactured by Idencia. Certain strategic cranes in the production hall, in the drying area and on the dike have been equipped with RFID antennas and readers in order to be able to read out the specific data of the blocks.

The Aucxis middleware HERTZ enables to conveniently consult all tag information, stored in the cloud, through a web platform accessible to Levvel and its partners at all times. Furthermore, thanks to the integration of HERTZ with the GPS systems of the cranes, an insight is provided into the exact position of every block.

Result:

  • No manual counting or data processing required;
  • The exact position of each block is retrievable at all times;
  • Specific reports with relevant data for high-performance analyses;
  • Timely action can be taken if something happens to a block.

We are proud that Aucxis can make a contribution to this important and challenging project with its RFID solution.
